BONANZA



                                This is a quote from the HWA Horror Writers Association.


                        In 1997,the horror field started to emerge from a decade long slump.

Today 16 years later,another decade.Horror is commercially viable.Its imprint is to be found at most major publishing house's,and is a sure sell,for youth-oriented films,television/cable programming and video games.



                                    BONANZA! I don't mean the Cartwright's.



I am a fiction writer,but the reality is.....horror/sci-fi,is a mega bucks industry.Has been,and will always be.We artists of color,are almost half of a century behind,when it comes to sharing a part of this BONANZA?


                             So...why can't we be more like the Cartwright's?

I AIN'T MAD AT YA!

 
 
I have compiled a list of past and present mind blowing horror series formats,on network television and cable networks.
 
Programs like:

*Walking Dead                            Also an endless array of Sci-Fi
 
So...I went out and bought all these series,an investment to my collection.But for the life of me,I couldn't find one series focusing on an Afro-american,or any other minority paranormal,supernatural storyline,or POV (Point Of View).There were great storylines with plenty of minorities in them,and I take my hat off.It just surprised me not being able to find one,out all these execellent tales,thats created to entertain,educate,and frighten the hell out of us.
 
The storytellers of those classic tales,have and are doing their jobs,of writing what has been deemed relevant.

WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW?

In most creative writing classe's the moto is,write what you know?

As stated earlier,my fascination of Black Supernatural History stemmed from my early experiences with the supernatural,both vicariously and literally.


A brief synopsis of my experiences:

Most six year old boys,and girls have fond memories of childhood wonders.But for me and my family circle,it was memories of raw terror of God fearing souls,being visited upon at a place called,the Washburen house.

In 1961,many afro-american families migrated from the south to the north,for better opportunities for themselves and children,escaping the nightmares of Jim Crow.It was traditional for my family,and other black families to share large apartments or house's,with all family members living together until they were able to find work,save up,venture out,and start individual families of their own.

The Washburen house was a sick silent cold dark old victorian,located in the Chicago blackbelt,and whatever force walked there had no love for us residing within its evil walls.Especially for us frighten children.

HAINT

I used the old south as a black american supernatural history catalysis,for reason's of wanting to examine the term HAINT?

Down through the ages,all the way back to biblical times,man has been lured to the possibilities of the supernatural,and has been visited upon.

Man has also been manipulated,exploited and conditioned to fear this unknown....especially during pre and post slavery.Slaves were kept in line by their owners,American terror groups like the  KKK,dressed in their ghostly white sheets in the eerie southern moonlight.Blacks were being told of evil spirits,getting revenge,if they'd ever got out of line or tried to escape the plantation.

But....wait! Was this just one of the head games from the playbook of Willie Lynch?

Or were these stories of Afro-American supernatural history true?

The term HAINT is a southern term meaning ghost,or restless spirit.The term originated during the horrors and bloody battles of the civil war.Where young men of the embattled confederate and union armies-black and white-lost their lives,spilling enough blood,guts,and mangled body parts that saturated the vast beautiful landscapes all along the southern peninsula.

And so the term HAINT was born.

THE POWER THAT BE RULES OR DO THEY....?

1. To many blacks in the film,and it becomes a black film?
2. Blacks don't gravitate to those films?
3. If theres no stereotypical black slapstick behavior,it won't be taken seriously?
4.Voodoo is the only form that can be written about blacks?
5. Blacks aren't like that?

And the list is endless.....

My intentions is not to BASH,or excluse anyone,or racial group.I look around at the horror/sci-fi genre landscape with an optimistic eye.The powers that be have started,to incorporate more minorities actors,and directors in tentpole productions.

The issue still lingers:STORYLINES RELEVANCY?

Is it a lack of creative talent? The answer is no.

There's an abundance of creative artists.But...to what RELEVANCE?

I feel the reason for the lack of....?



THE COMFORT ZONE EFFECT?


Once black writer's,producer's,director's discover the potential in these untapped tales,and abandon the comfort zone effect.Afro-American supernatural history will shine in the spotlight,just as the relevance of others.

BLACK AMERICAN SUPERNATURAL HISTORY

I created BASH to strike down the notion,that Afro-American's are without a supernatural history,unlike other racial groups.

Afro-American mainsteam history,was a slow process,coming into the spotlight at a snails pace.The same applies to Afro-American supernatural history.Not until it became relevant,it seeped into the conscieness of America.Now theres a black history month,and Universities offering degree's in black studies.

Theres an endless supply of untapped tales,from a people whose lifes have been personally touched.As a writer of horror tales,I see horror as a blending of a tragedy being unable to turn away.
Black American's have read about,experienced,or been told about horrifying tragedies from slavery until now.

Why Can't or Won't We Tell Our Stories?

RELEVANCY!

Case and Point:

At the tender young age of thirteen,my conception of a black supernatural tale was beyond my imagination,growing up with Dracula,Frankenstein,The Mummy,The Wolfman.My limited thinking was;only white folks had these types of stories? We had horror stories,but they were tales of,black struggles,inner-city life's,drugs,pimps and prostitutes,black on black crimes.

Not until 1968,an unknown Director George Romero created a little low budget indie film,NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.A film that rocked the foundation of my closed world,with the casting of a non-stereotypical black American character in the lead role.The late actor Duane Jones,in a horror film that has become a cult classic.

It was a modern day tale of horror,blended in with authenic tragedy.

Why can't we WRITE,PRODUCE,DIRECT,these types of tales depicting non-stereotypical afro-american storylines?
